Why are ionizers needed in the ESD protected area?

In manufacturing processes with ESD-relevant products, unwanted electrostatic charges can occur despite the use of ESD protection measures. What should I look out for when choosing an ionizer?

Choosing the right ionizer depends on various factors that should be tailored to the specific requirements of the area of application. Here are some key criteria to consider when making your choice:

  1. Effectiveness of ionization: The ionizer should be able to generate a sufficient number of ions to ionize the air quickly and effectively. Look for devices that achieve a high ion concentration and ensure uniform ionization throughout the area.

  2. Range and coverage: The ionizer should be suitable for the area of application. Stationary models with a greater range are required for larger production areas or ESD protection zones. Portable ionizers can be a good choice for smaller areas.

  3. Maintenance effort: Ionizers require regular maintenance to maintain their efficiency. Look out for models that are easy to maintain.

  4. Security functions: A good appliance should have safety features such as integrated overload protection or an automatic switch-off function to prevent damage to the appliances and hazards for users.

  5. Certifications and standards: Ensure that the ionizer meets the relevant ESD protection standards and is certified in accordance with recognized standards where applicable.

Ionizers are an essential component of an effective ESD protection system. They help to minimize the risk of electrostatic discharge and increase quality and safety in production. With the right ionizer, you can significantly reduce the risk of ESD and thus avoid failures and damage to sensitive electronic components.

However, it should be noted that ionizers are not a substitute for ESD protection measures, but provide support if other measures are not sufficient. Ionizers must always be adapted to the respective problem and the respective process in order to neutralize any resulting charges in sufficient time. There are many different ionization solutions on the market and it is not always easy to find the right solution.
