Tips for selecting the optimum solder wire

Tips for selecting the optimum solder wire 27.3.2024

Choosing the right solder wire depends on several factors, including the type of materials you want to solder, the application and the specific requirements of your soldering work.

Understand your requirements:

Before deciding on a solder wire, it is important to understand your specific requirements. Consider the following.

  • Which materials would you like to combine?
  • What type of connection do you need to make? (e.g. electrical connections, circuit board assembly, metal repair)
  • What environmental conditions will the connection be exposed to? (e.g. high temperatures, risk of corrosion)

Material and alloy

Choosing the right solder alloy is crucial. The two most common types of solder alloys are leaded solder and lead-free solder. More importance must be attached to lead-free alloys, as these must be used for environmental reasons in accordance with EU regulations (WEE/ROHS).

The melting temperature, strength, corrosion resistance and environmental compatibility of the alloy must always be taken into account.

Diameter

The diameter of the solder wire influences the heat distribution and the amount of solder used. Finer wires are suitable for precise work and small connections, while thicker wires provide more heat and are suitable for larger connections.

Flux

Fluxes help to remove oxide layers from the surfaces to be joined and improve wetting. Some solder wires already contain flux, while others need to be added separately. Make sure that the flux meets your requirements and is suitable for the materials you want to join.

Testing

It can be helpful to try out different solder wires and test their performance in your specific application. Take time to test different alloys, diameters and flux options to find the best solder wire for your needs.
